What Is Generative Engine Optimization?

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of structuring and publishing content so that generative AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini can retrieve it, trust it, and cite it inside the answers they write. It is optimization aimed at a machine that reads your page, summarizes what it finds, and names you as a source, rather than a human scanning a list of blue links.

The term marks a specific shift in what you are competing for. Traditional SEO earns a ranked position on a results page. GEO earns a sentence inside a generated answer, often with a link back to you. The mechanics overlap, but the target is different. You are optimizing to be quoted, not only to be listed.

How a generative engine decides to cite you

Most generative engines build their answers with retrieval augmented generation. When someone asks a question, the engine runs a search, pulls a small set of candidate pages, reads them, and composes an answer grounded in that retrieved text. To become the source it quotes, your page has to clear three bars at once.

  • Retrievable. The crawler can reach the page, and the content sits in the index the engine actually searches at query time.
  • Relevant. A passage answers the exact question being asked, in plain language, near the top of the page instead of buried below it.
  • Quotable. The answer exists as a self-contained sentence or short block that the model can lift cleanly, without stitching five scattered paragraphs together.
  • It helps to separate two outcomes that look similar. A citation is a linked source the engine attributes part of its answer to. A mention is when the model repeats a fact about you from its training data with no link attached. GEO works on both, but a citation is the stronger result, because it can send a visitor to your site, and it is verifiable right there in the answer.

    GEO compared to traditional SEO

GEO and SEO are relatives, not opposites. The clearest way to see the difference is to look at what each one is trying to win.

  • SEO optimizes for a ranking position. GEO optimizes for inclusion in a written answer.
  • SEO rewards whole pages. GEO rewards individual passages and clean, well-defined facts.
  • An SEO win is usually a click. A GEO win can be a citation with no click at all, which changes how you have to measure success.
  • The same disciplined page tends to do well in both. Clear structure, precise facts, and honest, specific writing serve a human reader and a model reading on that human's behalf equally well. GEO is less a replacement for SEO and more an added constraint on how you write and mark up everything you publish. If you want the longer argument about whether the old discipline still matters, the question of whether SEO is dead is worth reading on its own.

    Which engines GEO targets

GEO is not one platform. It is a handful of generative surfaces that each retrieve and cite a little differently, so the work has to account for all of them instead of chasing one.

  • ChatGPT, which can browse the live web and cite pages, and which also carries older facts in its training data.
  • Google AI Overviews, the generated summary that now sits above the classic results for many searches.
  • Perplexity, which is built around citations and shows its sources in the open for nearly every answer it gives.
  • Gemini and Claude, which increasingly ground their answers in retrieved sources when asked about a real business or topic.
  • The common thread is that each one reads text and decides what to repeat. That is why GEO focuses on the raw quality and structure of what you publish, not on a trick aimed at a single engine. A page written to be clearly understood and easily quoted tends to travel across all of these surfaces.

    What the work actually involves

GEO is a set of concrete deliverables, not a mindset. A few areas do most of the work, and each one is something you can build, check, and point to.

    Content structure

Lead with the answer. Use honest headings that match the questions people really ask, write self-contained passages, and keep each key fact near the top rather than under paragraphs of throat-clearing. This is the part of GEO most sites skip, and it is the part the engines reward most reliably.

    Entities and facts

A generative engine models the world as entities: people, businesses, places, and services, plus the relationships between them. GEO makes your business a clean, consistent entity. That means the same name, the same description, and the same facts everywhere the engine looks, reinforced with schema markup so the meaning is stated explicitly instead of guessed at.

    Crawler access

If your robots file blocks the AI crawlers, you quietly remove yourself from the pool an engine is allowed to cite. The named agents include GPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot, and others, and each one honors your robots directives on its own. GEO includes deciding which crawlers to allow and confirming they can actually reach your content, because a page a crawler cannot read is a page that can never be quoted.

    Measurement

You cannot improve what you never check. GEO includes watching how the engines answer the questions that matter to your business: which sources they cite, whether you show up, and which competitor they name when they do not name you. Done well, this turns a vague sense of AI visibility into a short list of prompts you can re-run and compare over time. That monitoring keeps the work honest, because the only proof that counts is the answer the engine actually returns.

    What GEO cannot promise

No one can guarantee a citation or a fixed position in an AI answer. The engines are opaque, they change retrieval and ranking without notice, and the same prompt can return different sources on different days. GEO improves the odds that your content is eligible to be cited and attractive to cite. It does not buy a slot. Anyone promising a guaranteed ranking inside ChatGPT is describing something that does not exist.

Ninetyfifth Marketing treats GEO as ongoing work on websites we build, run as a published monthly program with a defined initial term. The method is the product: structure, entities, crawler access, and measurement, repeated and adjusted as the engines move. You can see how the generative engine optimization service and its terms are set up on the service and pricing pages.

    Questions

    What does GEO stand for?

GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It is the practice of structuring content so that generative AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews can retrieve and cite it in the answers they write. The name mirrors SEO, but the target is an AI answer rather than a ranked list of links.

Is GEO the same as SEO?

No, though they overlap heavily. SEO aims to rank a page in a list of results, while GEO aims to get your content quoted inside an AI-generated answer. The same clean, well-structured, factually precise page usually helps both, so GEO is best treated as an extension of good SEO rather than a replacement for it.

Is GEO the same as answer engine optimization?

The two terms are used almost interchangeably. Generative engine optimization emphasizes engines that generate prose answers, and answer engine optimization emphasizes being the direct answer to a question. In practice the deliverables are the same: retrievable pages, quotable passages, clean entities, and crawler access.

Can anyone guarantee my business gets cited by ChatGPT?

No. The engines are opaque and change without notice, and the same prompt can surface different sources from one day to the next. Honest GEO improves the odds that your content is eligible and attractive to cite. It cannot buy a slot, and any promise of a guaranteed ranking inside ChatGPT should be treated as a warning sign.

Do I still need GEO if I already rank well on Google?

Probably yes. Ranking on Google and being cited in an AI answer are related but separate outcomes, and a growing share of searches now return a generated summary before the classic results. GEO makes sure the content you already rank with is also structured to be retrieved and quoted by the engines writing those answers.
