What Is a GEO Score, and Should You Trust It?

A GEO score is a single number, usually on a zero to one hundred scale, that estimates how visible and citable your business is inside AI answers from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. It is not a figure any AI platform publishes. A GEO score is assembled by a tool or an agency, and it is only ever as good as the method behind it.

Think of it as a weather report, not a thermometer reading. It points you in a direction and lets you track movement over time, but it is an estimate stitched together from many signals, not a precise measurement handed down by OpenAI or Google. Treat the method as more important than the number.

What a GEO score actually measures

Most GEO scores combine two kinds of inputs. The first is outcome data: how often your brand or domain shows up when AI engines answer the questions a buyer in your category would actually ask. The second is structural data: the on-page and technical signals that make a site easy for a model to read, trust, and quote.

To gather the outcome data, a tool runs a fixed panel of prompts through one or more AI engines and records what comes back. It is looking for two different things, and the difference between them matters more than most dashboards admit.

  • A citation is when the AI pulls from your page as a source and attributes the answer to it, often with a visible link. This is the signal that carries the most weight.
  • A mention is when your name appears in the answer text without being the sourced reference. It still helps, but it is weaker and less durable than a citation.
  • Structural inputs vary by tool, but they usually include whether AI crawlers can reach your pages, whether your content is organized into clear question and answer blocks, whether your business entity is described consistently across the web, and whether structured data spells out who you are and what you do.

How a GEO score gets calculated

There is no shared formula. Every tool picks its own prompt set, its own engines, its own weighting, and its own scale. That is the single most important thing to understand about the metric: the same score from two different tools is not measuring the same thing, so you cannot compare one vendor's number to another's.

What a sound method looks like

A defensible GEO score follows a repeatable sequence:

  • Define a prompt panel that reflects how real buyers phrase questions in your category and your city.
  • Run that panel across the specific AI engines your customers actually use.
  • Record citations, mentions, and which competitors show up in your place.
  • Weight those results, fold in the structural checks, and roll them into one comparable number.
  • Because the panel is fixed, you can run it again later and see whether the number moved for a reason you can explain, rather than because the tool quietly changed how it samples.

A GEO score is not domain authority

It is tempting to treat a GEO score as a new flavor of domain authority or a classic ranking score. It is not. Traditional authority scores estimate how likely a page is to appear in a list of blue links. A GEO score estimates how likely a model is to quote you inside a written answer where there may be no list at all. A site can rank well in classic search and still go uncited in AI answers, because being quotable is a different problem than being rankable.

What a GEO score is good for, and what it is not

Used honestly, a GEO score is a baseline and a progress bar. It tells you roughly where you stand before any work begins, and it gives you a fixed thing to re-measure so you can tell whether your changes are helping. It is also a clean way to see which competitors are winning the citations you want.

Used carelessly, it becomes a vanity number. Chasing the score for its own sake pulls attention away from the work that actually earns citations: clear answers, clean structure, open crawler access, and a consistent entity. The number is a symptom. The content and the structure are the cause.

No score, and no agency, can promise a specific position in an AI answer. The engines retrain their models and reshuffle their sources on their own schedule. What a disciplined process can do is make your site a clearer and more quotable source in your category, then measure the movement over time instead of guessing.

    How Ninetyfifth Marketing approaches it

We treat a GEO score as an internal yardstick, not a product you buy. Because we perform AI search and traditional SEO only on websites we build, we control the structure, the schema, and the crawler access that most scores depend on. We set a baseline with an audit, define a prompt panel for your category, and track citations and share of voice as the work compounds.

The commercial model is a published monthly retainer with a defined initial term, the custom website included, and one client per industry per city. You can see how the retainer and term work on the SEO pricing page linked below. The score is simply how we keep ourselves honest about whether that retainer is doing its job.

    Questions

Is a GEO score an official metric from OpenAI or Google?

No. No AI platform publishes a GEO score. Every GEO score is computed by a third party tool or agency, so treat it as an estimate and judge the method behind it rather than trusting the number on its own.

What is a good GEO score?

There is no universal threshold, because every tool uses a different scale and prompt set. A more useful question is whether your score is improving on a fixed panel over time, and how you compare to the competitors being cited in your category right now.

How is a GEO score different from an SEO ranking?

An SEO ranking estimates where your page lands in a list of links. A GEO score estimates how likely an AI model is to quote you inside a written answer. You can rank well in classic search and still be invisible in AI answers, because the two are different problems.

Can I improve my GEO score?

Yes, by fixing the inputs it rewards: crawler access, clear question and answer content, consistent entity information, and structured data. No one can promise a specific score or position, but the underlying work is concrete and measurable.

Do I need a tool to get a GEO score?

You need some repeatable way to run a prompt panel across AI engines and record citations and mentions. A tool automates that, but the value comes from a consistent panel and honest scoring, not from any particular dashboard.
