Ai Search
Does AI search actually send real traffic to your site?
Does AI search actually send traffic? Yes, it does. It sends fewer clicks per answer than a traditional blue link, and those clicks arrive in a different shape: warmer, later in the decision, and often disguised as branded search rather than a clean referral.
The honest version is more useful than the hype or the panic. AI assistants answer many questions without any click at all. But when they cite a source, a real slice of users click through, and being named in those answers pulls people back to you days later through search and direct visits. If you only count raw referral clicks, you will undervalue what AI search is doing.
Where an AI click actually comes from
Traffic from AI search depends on one thing: a citation. A citation is the clickable link an assistant attaches to a claim, usually a numbered footnote or a source card. When a user taps it, you get a visit. Without a citation, there is no click to send.
Citation versus mention
These two are not the same, and the difference decides whether you see traffic.
Why the referral number looks smaller than it is
Three things make AI search traffic hard to see in a dashboard, and all three make the raw number look low.
How the major engines handle outbound clicks
The engines do not behave the same way, so the traffic you can expect differs by platform.
What the traffic is worth when it arrives
An AI referral is pre-qualified. The assistant has already summarized the options, and the user clicked your link to go deeper, which means they arrive further along than a cold searcher skimming ten blue links. Fewer visitors, higher intent. For a service business, a smaller number of ready-to-act visitors can matter more than a flood of top-of-funnel clicks. That is the real trade, and it is why the raw click count is the wrong single metric to judge AI search by.
How to see it, and how we build for it
You can measure the floor of this today. In GA4, segment by source and watch for referral hostnames like chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and gemini.google.com, then correlate rises in branded and direct traffic with the answers that name you. That captures the referral floor even though it misses the delayed effect.
On the build side, the work is structural. We make the site easy for an assistant to retrieve, quote, and attribute, so a citation is likely rather than accidental.
This runs as part of an SEO and AI search engagement on sites we build, on a published retainer. The commercial terms are published separately; the point of this page is the mechanism, not the invoice.
Questions
Does AI search send less traffic than Google?
Per answer, usually yes. AI assistants resolve many questions without a click, so the raw referral volume is lower than classic organic search. The visits that do come tend to be higher intent, and much of the real impact shows up later as branded search.
Which AI engines actually send referral clicks?
Perplexity is the most click-friendly because it foregrounds numbered sources. ChatGPT in search mode attaches clickable citations, and Google AI Overviews and Gemini link out as well. The volume differs by platform and by how the user phrases the question.
Why don't I see AI traffic in my analytics?
Three reasons. Zero-click answers mean no visit at all, some assistants strip the referrer so visits land in direct, and the delayed branded searches an AI answer triggers never carry an AI label. A clean AI traffic number rarely exists without deliberate setup.
Is AI search traffic worth optimizing for if the volume is small?
For a service business, often yes. A smaller set of pre-qualified visitors who already saw the assistant summarize their options can convert better than a large volume of cold clicks. Judge it on quality of visit and downstream branded search, not raw click count.
What is the difference between being cited and being mentioned in an AI answer?
A citation is a clickable linked source that can send a visit and shows up as a referral. A mention is your name in the answer text with no link, which builds trust but sends no direct click. Optimization aims for citations first.
