AI Visibility: Earning a Place in AI Answers

AI visibility is whether an AI assistant names your business when a buyer asks it for a recommendation, and whether it gets the details right when it does. It is a separate problem from a Google ranking, because an answer engine reads a small set of sources, writes one synthesized reply, and surfaces only a few of them by name.

This page explains what AI visibility is, how systems like ChatGPT and Perplexity decide who to name, and the method we use to earn it. We treat it as an engineering and content problem with concrete deliverables, not a growth promise.

What AI Visibility Actually Measures

Visibility in an answer engine is not one thing. It breaks into a few distinct states, and conflating them is a common mistake.

  • A mention: the model writes your business name in its answer. This is the floor. It means the system knows you exist and treats you as relevant to the question.
  • A citation: the model attributes a specific claim to a page on your site, often with a link. A citation is stronger than a mention, because it means your page was in the retrieved source set the model actually read.
  • Accuracy: when the model describes you, your category, service area, and offer are correct. A confident but wrong description is worse than silence, because buyers act on it.
  • Share of voice: across the questions your buyers actually ask, how often you appear versus the competitors who keep showing up instead.
  • Done honestly, AI visibility is measured against a fixed panel of real buyer prompts, rerun over time. A single lucky answer is noise. A pattern across many prompts and several engines is signal, and that is what we optimize toward.

How an Answer Engine Decides Who to Name

Most AI answers are generated with retrieval. The system takes the user question, searches an index or the live web for relevant pages, pulls a handful into its working context, and writes an answer grounded in what it just read. This is why a page can be well written and still be invisible: if it is never retrieved, the model never sees it.

Two things drive retrieval. First, the page has to be reachable and readable by the crawlers these companies run, which are separate from Googlebot. If your site blocks them or buries the answer inside a script, you are opting out. Second, the content has to match the question and state the answer in plain, extractable language. Models favor sources that make a claim directly and support it with structure, not pages that circle a topic without ever answering it.

An llms.txt file is one small lever here. It is a plain-text file at the root of your site that points AI systems to your most important, canonical pages. A single line in it can say, in effect, this is the authoritative page about this service, read this one. It does not force a citation, but it reduces the chance a model grounds its answer in a stale or third-party version of you.

Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and ChatGPT weight these signals differently, and each runs its own crawler and index. That is why visibility has to be checked per engine rather than assumed from a single good answer.

Why a Business Is Invisible to AI

When a company does not show up, the cause is usually mechanical, not mysterious.

  • The site blocks or never invited the AI crawlers, so its pages are never in the retrievable set.
  • The important claims live in images, PDFs, or client-side scripts that read as empty to a crawler.
  • There is no single clear page answering the question a buyer is actually typing, so the model stitches its reply from competitors who do have one.
  • The business entity is ambiguous: name, category, and location are inconsistent across the site and the wider web, so the model is not confident enough to name it.
  • Third-party sources describe the business more clearly than its own site does, so the model cites them instead of you.
  • How We Build AI Visibility

We run this as a repeatable method, not a one-time trick. Because we perform this work only on sites we build, we control the technical foundation instead of fighting someone else's theme.

    Establish the baseline

Before changing anything, we run a fixed panel of buyer prompts across the major answer engines and record what they say about you today: whether you appear, whether the facts are right, and who appears instead. That baseline is what every later change is measured against.

    Fix retrieval and the entity

We confirm the AI crawlers can reach and parse the pages that matter, expose the key claims as real text, and make your business entity consistent across the site and the structured data a model reads. The goal is that a system can tell who you are and what you do without guessing.

    Structure the answers

We build and shape the specific pages that answer your buyers' real questions, written so the answer is stated plainly near the top and supported with structure a model can lift cleanly. This is where content and engineering meet, and it is the part generic SEO usually skips.

    Monitor and adjust

Visibility in AI answers moves as models and indexes update. We rerun the prompt panel on a schedule, watch where you gain or lose ground, and adjust. This is ongoing work, which is why it lives inside a retainer rather than a single project.

What You Get, and Who This Is For

The deliverables are concrete: a documented baseline, the technical fixes applied to your site, the answer pages built, an llms.txt and structured data layer, and recurring reporting against the prompt panel so you can see movement instead of taking our word for it.

  • A reusable prompt panel tied to your actual buyers, not vanity questions.
  • A site that AI crawlers can reach, read, and interpret without ambiguity.
  • Answer-first pages for the high-intent questions your buyers ask before they buy.
  • Ongoing monitoring so a drop is caught and addressed, not discovered by accident.
  • We take one client per industry per city, so this work is never used to lift a direct competitor in the same market. Because the custom website and the optimization are a single engagement on a monthly retainer with a defined initial term, the honest fit is a business that wants to compete for its category answer over time, not buy a one-off report. For how the engagement and term work, see /services/seo/. For how it is priced, see /pricing/seo/.

We do SEO on websites we build. AI search optimization is part of that same engagement.

    Questions

Is AI visibility the same as SEO?

No. SEO is mostly about ranking pages in a list of blue links. AI visibility is about whether an answer engine names and describes you inside a single synthesized response. They share a technical foundation, but a page can rank well on Google and still never be retrieved or cited by an AI assistant.

Can I pay to appear in AI answers?

Not in the organic answer itself. The business names an AI assistant surfaces come from what it retrieves and reads, not from an ad placement. You pay for the work of making your site reachable, clear, and authoritative enough to be chosen, not for a guaranteed slot.

    How is AI visibility measured?

Against a fixed panel of real buyer prompts, rerun across several engines over time. We record whether you appear, whether the description is accurate, and which competitors show up instead. A single answer is an anecdote. The pattern across the panel is the real measure.

How long until my AI visibility improves?

It depends on how reachable and clear your site is to start, and how often the engines recrawl and reindex. We cannot promise a date or a ranking. What we can do is fix the mechanical blockers, structure the answers, and monitor the panel so progress is visible as it happens.

Do you do AI visibility work on a site you didn't build?

No. We perform AI search optimization only on websites we build, because the technical foundation is most of the work and we will not stake results on a platform we do not control. The custom site and the optimization come as one engagement.
