AI SEO: getting quoted by AI, not just ranked by Google

AI SEO is what search optimization becomes when the reader is an answer engine, not a ranked list. The letters SEO stay because the plumbing is shared, but the target moves. Instead of earning a blue link a human clicks, you are trying to become the source an AI assistant quotes, and names, when it answers a question in your market in a few sentences of its own prose. It reads your page once, keeps the facts it can verify, and discards the rest.

That shift makes AI SEO a genuine discipline rather than a rename of the old one. The unit of success is no longer a ranked URL. It is being the thing a model can quote cleanly, attribute to you by name, and stand behind when a buyer asks it who to call. What follows is the mechanism underneath that, the work it takes to influence it, and the parts no honest practitioner will promise.

What AI SEO actually optimizes

An answer engine builds its reply in stages. It retrieves a set of candidate pages, extracts facts from them, composes an answer in its own words, and on some surfaces attaches a short list of sources. AI SEO works on each stage you can influence: whether your pages get retrieved at all, whether the facts on them are clean enough to lift without rewriting, and whether the business those facts describe is unambiguously you.

The last point is where most sites quietly fail. A model has to connect a claim to an entity it already recognizes. When your name, location, category and services are stated inconsistently across your own pages and the wider web, the model keeps the fact and drops the attribution. So a large part of the work is making you a single, consistent entity a model can name without guessing, rather than a loose collection of pages it cannot tie together.

Underneath this is a retrieval step the industry calls grounding: before it answers, the model fetches live or indexed text and leans on that text instead of its training memory. Grounding is the opening AI SEO exploits. If your page is the clearest, most current and most quotable text on the exact question a buyer asked, it is the text the model is most likely to pull in and repeat. If it is not, the model grounds on whoever wrote the better answer, and that is frequently a directory or a competitor rather than you.

Named versus cited

These are two different wins with two different causes, and conflating them is how a program wastes a quarter. Being named means your business appears inside the sentence of the answer. Being cited means your page appears in the source list beneath it. A model will describe your service accurately and then link a directory instead of you, and it will link your page while recommending a competitor in the paragraph above. AI SEO treats named and cited as separate targets, because the fix for one does not deliver the other.

How AI SEO differs from ranking in Google

Traditional SEO and AI SEO share a foundation. A page that is slow, uncrawlable, or structured so a machine cannot tell what it is about loses in both places. The difference is the output. A search engine hands back a list and the user chooses. An answer engine returns one composed response and does the choosing itself, so there is often no click to win, only a mention to earn.

It also changes what a win looks like. In classic SEO a win is a visit. In AI SEO a win is often a recommendation the buyer acts on before they ever see your site, then arrives already told you are the right call. That is harder to attribute and more valuable when it lands, which is why the measurement looks at answers and mentions rather than at rankings alone.

This is why we do not sell AI SEO as a separate product bolted onto a site. It runs inside the same retainer as the search work, on the same pages, because the thing that earns a citation in an AI answer is usually the thing that earns a strong organic result: one page that answers one question completely, in the words the question was asked in. The full search service and the published retainer are set out on the SEO service and pricing pages linked below.

What the work involves

AI SEO is a standing program, not a one time cleanup, because the answer surfaces keep changing and your competitors keep publishing. On a site we build and control, the recurring work falls into a few concrete areas, each of which maps to a stage in how the model assembles its answer.

  • Entity clarity: stating who you are, where you operate and what you do consistently across every page, and marking it up so a crawler reads it the same way a person does.
  • Content structured to answer a single question per page, with the direct answer stated first and the supporting detail under it, so a model can quote the page without reassembling it from scattered parts.
  • Crawler access: a robots policy and an llms.txt file that point AI crawlers at the pages you intend as the canonical answers, instead of leaving them to infer it from a sprawling site.
  • Schema markup that states your facts in a form built for machines, so a claim in your prose has a structured twin a model can lean on when it needs to verify before repeating.
  • Measurement against a fixed set of buyer prompts, recorded on a regular cadence, so the program is judged on whether answers start naming and citing you rather than on how much activity it generated.
  • How we run it, and who it is for

AI SEO is only as good as the pages it runs on, so we do it only on websites we build. We will not retrofit it onto a site whose structure, markup and content we do not control, because the first month would be spent fighting decisions someone else made and the results would never be clean. The custom website is part of the engagement, not a prerequisite you buy somewhere else first.

The engagement is a published monthly retainer with a 90 day initial term, and the figure is stated plainly on the pricing page rather than quoted after a discovery call. We also take one search client per industry per city, because the entire point is to make one business the answer in a market, and you cannot do that for two competitors at once. If a competitor signs first, the honest answer is that the slot is taken.

    What AI SEO cannot promise

No one can promise you a position in an AI answer, and anyone who does is selling a number with no denominator under it. Models are non deterministic, personalised and versioned, so the same prompt can return different answers to two people on the same day, or to the same person a week apart. There is no ordered list to hold a fixed place in.

What we sell is method and measurement, not a guaranteed outcome. We make your facts clean, quotable and attributable, we structure your pages to be the most direct answer to the questions your buyers actually ask, and we record whether the answers start naming and citing you over time. The reporting shows you the raw answers the engines return, not a tidied summary, and the direction those answers move is the thing we hold ourselves accountable for. A promised position is not something we will put in writing, because it is not something anyone can honestly control.

We do SEO on websites we build. AI search optimization is part of that same engagement.

    Questions

What is the difference between AI SEO and regular SEO?

Regular SEO competes for a position in a list of links. AI SEO competes to be the source an answer engine quotes and cites inside a written answer, where there is often no list and no click to win. They share the same technical foundation, which is why we run them together rather than as separate products.

Can you guarantee I will show up in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?

No, and no one honestly can. AI answers are non deterministic and vary by user, version and day, so there is no fixed position to guarantee. What we commit to is the method and the measurement: cleaner facts, better structured pages, and a monthly record of whether answers start naming and citing you.

Do I need a new website for AI SEO, or can you work on my current one?

We do AI SEO only on websites we build, and the custom site is included in the engagement. The structure, markup and content a model reads are the levers, and we will not promise results on a codebase we cannot change. The pricing page lays out what a build plus the retainer involves.

    How is AI SEO priced?

It is a published monthly retainer with a 90 day initial term, with the website included, and the figure is on the pricing page rather than quoted after a call. We also take one search client per industry per city, so price is not the only thing that decides whether we can take you on.

Is AI SEO worth paying for yet, or is it too early?

It depends on whether your buyers already ask assistants for recommendations in your market, which in many service categories they now do. The honest test is to measure what the answer engines say about you today. If you are absent from the prompts your buyers use, that is the gap AI SEO exists to close.
